Holy Vikings, this looks awesome... VALHALLA RISING (w/ director Nicolas Winding Refn in person!)

VALHALLA RISING @ Cinefamily... (postponed) Due to a rescheduling of director Nic Refn's personal appearance, our Tuesday screening of Valhalla Rising is postponed to a yet-to-be-determined date in September. Bret sez: "We greatly apologize for the confusion -- for all those who bought pre-sale tickets, Brown Paper Tickets has refunded your ticket purchase."

Which is ok, because you can go see ZZ Top at the Antelope Valley fair that night for a $2 admission.

August 25

Evolver LA Spore 1:7 Resistance is Fertile, 7:30pm, donation

Join Evolver Los Angeles on Wed the 25th for our August Spore on DIY Resilience. The focus for the evening will be around innovative methods that we all can take to gain personal resilience while creating and supporting a movement towards global resilience. We will examine and participate in the gift circle movement, as well as discuss sustainable living in the kitchen, in the garden, and in community.

Our guest for the evening will be author, and meditation teacher, Deborah Eden Tull who is the founder of Creative Green Sustainability Coaching where she teaches workshops locally and nationally. Eden will be leading us in personal awareness meditations and sustainability exercises meant to increase our personal sustainability while widening our vision of personal and community resilience. She will also present practical actions we can take, focusing on our relationship with food and urban food sustainability, which is the topic of her new book, "The Natural Kitchen: Your Guide to the Sustainable Food Revolution."

"[I]n the planetary ecosystem there is no such thing as waste: the waste of one creature is the food of another, creating a sacred gift circle." - Charles Eisenstein The Johny Appleseed of the Gift Circle

This evening will begin with the launching of the Evolver LA Gift Circle, where we will come together to discuss a gift and a need we have with the community and begin to find ways to increase personal and communal cohesiveness by practicing expressing our needs and sharing our many gifts. Conducted by Evolver's 'Agent of Transformation' Baza Novic.

Come join us in building a new story here in LA. An empowering story about learning our lessons with wisdom from the community and from within. A meta-story about us enjoying living in this creative and emergent city by giving back and creating change in our own back yard for the benefit of all sentient beings.

We will be discussing our Citizen Forestry Tree Care program for Griffith Park and surrounding parks with Treepeople. As well as the Evolver Global mission to support emerging communities, holistic initiatives, and the idea that it is our world to change.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 28

Midnite screening of the Dark Crystal--one night only--Bruin Theatre, Westwood Village

For those who haven't seen the Dark Crystal, holy crap. This movie scared the bejeesus out of me when I was a tot, as the Gelflings fled scary-evil now buzzards who stole their “life force.” This is a one-night only screening, and I never see it making the midnite circuit.

Insomniac Cinema! Another planet, another time. 1000 years ago the mysterious Dark Crystal was damaged by one of the Urskeks and an age of chaos has began! The evil race of grotesque birdlike lizards the Skeksis, gnomish dragons who rule their fantastic planet with an iron claw. Meanwhile the orphan Jen, raised in solitude by a race of the peace-loving wizards called the Mystics, embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of the Dark Crystal which gives the Skesis their power and restore the balance of the universe.

Hey, kids... apologies for not making more Fortean noise as of late... "this economy" has caused, for me at least, a temporary shift in reality--which is an illusion anyway. That being said, I suspect that some of you have found yourselves in a similar state and might feel compelled to take stock of your mortality and/or sense of purpose in life. Where better than in a museum surrounded by mummies from around the globe?

Sure, the Rosicrucians have mummies in San Jose (FYI: half of them are replicas.) I have it on good authority from a gay Jesuit archaeology professor that this exhibit is not to be missed.

Saturday, August 7th... let's get a group of 15 or more together to celebrate life by examining the after life (that way we can get the group discount; carpooling is encouraged as parking is $8 a car.) I don't think the IMAX film will be neccessary, but we can discuss that as the date approaches.

Mummies of the WorldInside The Mummies!

Mummies of the World
, the largest traveling exhibition of mummies ever assembled, presents a never-before-seen collection of both accidental and intentionally preserved mummies, presented with reverence and dignity. The collection includes ancient mummies and important artifacts from Asia, Oceania, South America and Europe as well as ancient Egypt, dating as far back as 6,500 years.

Through engaging interactive exhibits, Mummies of the World illustrates how current science tools enable us to study mummies in new and non-invasive ways, allowing unprecedented insights to past cultures and civilizations. The exhibit will reveal how the scientific study of mummies provides a window into the lives of ancient peoples from every region of the world.

Mummies of the World will thoroughly engage the visitor, and suggests thought-provoking issues such as: Who were they? Where are they from? How did they live? How did they die? What secrets do the mummies hold about the past…and what clues do they bring us for the future?

Mummies of the World, which will debut at the California Science Center, was developed by American Exhibitions, Inc. in association with the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums of Mannheim, Germany.

!Father’s Day Lecture with Laura and Bob Steenberge

was on Sunday, June 20th, 2010 8pm

Laura Steenberge and her father, Bob Steenberge, talk about the visualization of the cosmos from the ancient Greeks to the Hubble Telescope, with a special emphasis on infrared sensor technology.

BACKGROUND:

2009 was an exciting year for space data: Water was discovered on the moon and the Hubble Telescope was updated with a new array of instruments, including infrared sensors that allow us to see back in time to within 600-800 million years of the Big Bang.

How does the technology work? How can they detect water on the moon without going to the moon? What does it mean to see further back in time, and how is that accomplished? Laura’s dad, Bob, works for Teledyne, the company that made the visible/infrared sensors recently attached to the Hubble Telescope and the Chandrayaan-1 (the lunar probe that detected the water on the moon).

As luck would have it, Bob is pretty good at explaining technical things to non-technical people! Laura will share examples of how the visualization of the cosmos has changed over time in relation to the technology available, from antiquity to the 20th century. Bob will pick up the timeline in the 20th century and talk about the role of infra-red sensors in modern telescopes and space probes. @ Machine Project, details and directions here: http://machineproject.com/events/2010/06/20/fathers-day-lecture/

LA Santacon

This weekend!

12/12/2009 - LASantacon
December 12, 2009

Information >> http://www.heathervescent.com/
santacon/

Canter's Delicatessen and Restaurant
419 North Fairfax Avenue
Los Angeles, California 90036
(323) 651-2030

Ho Ho Ho Tickets!

The moment you've been waiting for.... ticketing information for Santacon 2009 has arrived. Pop on over here to get your tickets. A few notes.

1. Everyone must have a ticket (price optional). If you opt not to pay for a ticket, Santa highly suggests you bring cacophony to share.
2. You must also show up with your own $5 metro pass.

Santa would also like to thank everyone who filled out the survey. Your responses were very colorful. Santa will be sharing some of those later, but we overwhelming heard that you want to kick it back to the Cacophony (and yes, we know the "bar crawl" last year sucked - that's not how it was supposed to happen). Santa was surprised at how many of you want a pony. Be careful for what you ask for......

But back to the Cacophony. Santacon is a response to the consumer-culture of Amerika's Holiday season. To that end, Santa would invite, incite you to come with your way to create and spin up the cacophony. Santa is working hard to put Santa in a place where cacophony can ensue; however it's up to Santa to create it.

(Only one request: can we keep the meta-pranks: the pranks on Santa, to a minimum? Remember who we're pranking. Pranking the pranksters can be fun and games but is lost in the larger scheme of the event.) Also, don't be a douchebag asshole Santa. No-one likes that.

Alright Santa, get your tickets, and we'll see you on the first day of Hannukah: 12/12! Ho ho ho.

Santarchy sweeps Los Angeles streets on 12/12/2009. Stay tuned for more details, but you can mark your calendar and start planning.

In the November 12th issue of LA Weekly, there appeared an article by Doug Harvey reviewing, amongst others, an installation by L.O.W.F.I friend Jeffrey Vallance as well as the Mantong and Protong Szukalski/Shaver exhibit. You can read it here.

Maja'sHope you were able to tag along with Maja!

If you're in Los Angeles on October 31st, why not do something that'd fit right into a L.O.W.F.I frame of mind? You can simulate one of our outings very closely if you were to join the Occult Los Angeles Tour called Maja's Mysteries: A Magical Excursion into Secret Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has always attracted spiritual seekers, some swimming down the mainstream of thought, others exploring esoteric tributaries. Maja's Mysteries is a guided excursion to some of the city's most fascinating spiritual sites hosted by Maja D'Aoust, lecturer and librarian at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz, in association with Kim Cooper and Richard Schave of Esotouric. The tour's theme is "Consciousness impacts objective reality," a jumping off point for explorations of the nature of reality itself. Join Maja and Esotouric for a metaphysical journey into history, faith and magic in the Southland, with in-depth visits to some of the city's most compelling and seldom-seen spiritual sites.

Tour stops include: Downtown L.A.'s landmark 1927 Theosophy Hall, which is simultaneously an exquisite architectural time capsule and a thriving center for spiritual study where all are welcome to explore the wisdom of the ages in leaderless gatherings for which no payment is ever asked.

The local home of the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O), the esoteric fraternal organization and religion that, under the leadership of Aleister Crowley in the early 20th Century, was rededicated to the Law of Thelema, with its twin directives “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" and "Love is the law, love under will.”

The Gnostic Society of Glendale (established 1928), where for more than 40 years our host Dr. Stephan A. Hoeller, the Bishop of the Ecclesia Gnostica and senior holder of the English Gnostic Transmission in America, has given Friday evening lectures exploring Gnosticism as living religious practice.

Maja says, "The mystery of magic in all its forms lives and breathes in us from the depths of our blood to the tips of our souls. From the Shamans of old to the modern day quantum physicists, the effect of our sheer will on the material world makes up a large part of what defines us as a species. Impacting reality with our consciousness, and conversely, reality's impact upon our consciousness lies at the base of every kind of magic from sympathetic voodoo to thaumaturgy. Making things happen with your mind, whether bringing the rain, healing a disease, invoking a God or prestidigitating an illusion, the art of conscious change is the very heart of the magical mystery of living."
Join us on the Maja's Mysteries tour for a one-of-a-kind Halloween adventure through the looking glass, and beyond.

"I am made of water. You wouldn't know it, because I have it bound in. My friends are made out of water, too: all of them. The problem for us is that not only do we have to walk around without being absorbed by the ground but we also have to earn our livings.

Actually, there's an even greater problem. We don't feel at home anywhere we go." - Philip K. Dick

Come discover Philip K. Dick's Fullerton, with our gracious host and tour guide, the venerable Robert Larson, this Monday, September 21st. Convene at 3pm at the corner of Chapman and State College, or contact me as soon as possible to iron out carpooling options from Lost Angles. (Feel free to forward this invite to any PKD enthusiast you may know in town.)

Bring a favorite PKD quote, passage or story to share at the last stop, which is, thankfully, a bar. One that PKD drank in (and wrote a scene or two about). Email me directly for more info: Skylaire@gmail.com.

CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) - The hottest thing on the griddle at the Las Palmas restaurant these days isn't the food — it's the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that a cook says she saw on the griddle. Restaurant manager Brenda Martinez says more than 100 people have flocked to the small town of Calexico on the California-Mexico border to gaze at the likeness of the Virgin Mary since it was discovered as the griddle was being cleaned. Among the awe-struck was a group of masked Mexican wrestlers who arrived Thursday for an exhibition at a nearby swap meet. One, known as Mr. Tempest, says: "This is amazing. It's a true miracle." Since the discovery, the griddle has been taken out of service and placed in a shrine in a storage room. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D97T3NGO0&show_article=1
